"When you
are stood before a Kulczak painting, you seem to
be observing human life as if through some kind
of magical illustrative microscope."
through
some kind of magical illustrative microscope.
Life is frequently represented in micro-scales
and there is a recurring 'germ-like' theme to the
manifestation of Kulczak's subject matter. Single
cell organisms or bizarrely shaped 'bacteria'
propagate the paintings and illustrations, but in
an obviously human context. It is this comparison
that Kulczak makes, this substitution of human
with germ, that forces us to reconsider our
belief that humanity 'lords' over the Earth. Are
we, in fact, just a germ, a virus, an infection
of the biological system of the Earth?
Several examples from Kulczak's stunning portfolio were featured in the 'New Cambridgeshire Artists' exhibition at Needhams Restaurant in Witchford, Ely, during 2006 and his large painting 'Pappy' brought Kulczak his first competition success, when it was selected as a finalist in the 'Liberte D'Expression Underground World Of Art Competition', sponsored by Barclays Bank plc. The competition culminated in exhibitions at Canary Wharf and at Candid Arts Trust Galleries in Islington.
We gave him his first solo exhibition during 2007 when we exhibited 'The Kulczak Fusion' at the Three Cups Gallery in Ely and he followed up with another solo at The Glass Onion in Peterborough during 2008.
